Install CyanogenMod 9 Android 4.0.4 ICS Motorola Defy Plus

Finally we found the tutorial How to Install CyanogenMod 9 CM9 Android 4.0.4 ICS custom Firmware rom update on Motorola Defy Plus. Motorola Defy+ Plus is a rigid Android Smartphone from telecom giant Motorola. They have done pretty fine with this phone but we are not much impressed with battery. The phone is totally water and dust resistant. For people who work on very dirty atmosphere or keep throwing and dropping their phone here and there can go for this phone. Recently, XDA dev forum member has launched Android 4.0.4 ICS custom ROM for Defy Plus and it is not official yet still in beta stage. This custom developed ROM is based on CyanogenMod 9 which can be installed manually, most of the things are working. Being based on AOKP this ROM is fast and performing nice with battery as well. You just need to root your Defy plus on current firmware which you are currently running and also install Custom Recovery too.

Warning: Be careful while following the methods and procedures mentioned in this article, as they can completely damage your phone or brick it for which neither we nor the developer will hold any responsibility.

Let see which features will work on this latest firmware rom version. Wi-Fi connection runs good with no more frequent disconnections, camera with panorama mode, plays 720p videos without any lagging.

Pre-Requisites:

1. The methods and steps mentioned in this article are only meant for Motorola Defy Plus users. Trying them on any other device or any other model of Motorola may produce un-desired outputs.
2. Please charge your device so that there is at least 70% charge with it, to assure that there will be no Power interruption during the process.
3. You should backup all essential data’s on your phone, as there are chances of them getting lost during the process.
4. Disable all Security programs like Firewall and Antivirus from your computer and uninstall the same from your phone, as these security programs generally tend to interrupt the process.
5. Enable USB Debugging in your respective Motorola Defy Plus from the path “Settings > Applications > Development > USB debugging”. The option of USB Debugging should be ticked.

Steps and Procedure to update Motorola Defy+ with ICS 4.0.4 Firmware:

1. Download the latest ICS for the Motorola Defy + plus from here and Google Apps package from here to your computer. Copy both the files and place them on the root directory of your phone’s SD card.

2. Reboot your phone so as to enter it in Recovery Mode. To do so, press the Volume Down + Power buttons together for few seconds until you see the Recovery Menu.

Note: After entering into recovery mode you should wipe the cache Partition & must wipe Data/Factory reset. If you done above two things then procedure for next step.

3. Now, from the Recovery Menu select “install zip from sdcard” then select “choose zip from sd card” and then choose the firmware package you’ve downloaded and placed on the SD card.

4. After the firmware is installed you will be taken back to the Recovery Menu, repeat the same procedure to flash the Google Apps Package. That is, “install zip from sdcard” -> “choose zip from sdcard” and then browse to the Gapps package from your SD card.

5. When the Google Apps Package has been successfully flashed, return back to the Recovery Menu and select “reboot system now” to reboot your system and land into the new installed ICS firmware.

That’s it; you’ve successfully updated your Motorola Defy+ with ICS 4.0.4 Firmware. Share your joy with us or let us know if you have any issue, we are here to find a solution for the same.

  30. Hi Joseph,
Thanks a lot for quick reply.
Yes I installed 2ndInit 2.3, installed boot menu, its been granted superuser permission. When I go to CWM ROM Manager v5.0.0.8, options I have are
    Recovery:
1.Flash CWM recovery, 2.Reboot into recovery.
    ROM management:
1.Install ROM from SD Card, 2.Download ROM, 3.Check for ROM Update.
Backup and restore, Utilities, More recoveries.
I don't see the option you mentioned "Custom Recovery".

Also as mentioned in guides, Under recovery, I do not see option saying " Install ZIP from SD Card " Ooption I see is "Install UPDATE from SD Card".

    ReplyDelete
  31. seems that you have root perfectly but still one thing you need to install i.e, clockworkmod recovery.

ok do like this. Open Rom Manager and click Flash CWM recocvery.

It will ask you select your device. After that it will check on internet to find the compatible custom recovery file to your device. mail me josephshenoy@gmail.com i will tell further steps.

I successfully updated my Defy+ to CM9 9-20120716-NIGHTLY-jordan-plus and it was working great until i decided to go for Mobile Number Portability(MNP). The new active sim card doesn't detect the network and fails to register.

Tried re-flashing the entire thing after wiping cache, data/factory still the problem persists. The same sim card works well with other handsets.

Is this a known bug with CM9 for Defy+ ? any idea.

  103. Hi Joseph,

I am trying to install Cyanogen 9 on my Motorola Defy + (MB526) v2.3.4.

I have rooted my phone as of now and i want to install CWM before starting on my installation of CM9.

I have installed ROM Manager and am trying to install CWM from this app. But the option 'Defy +' is not prompted while i try to install. Is that ok if i select Defy ? Is there any specific version of CWM to be installed for this phone ?

And i am confused about "2ndInit BootMenu". Is this some software to install CWM ??

    Waiting for your reply.

  104. Hello Joseph,

I wanted to know whether i should install CWM first or 2nd init for Defy (SndInitDefy)?

I have rooted my phone and am able to see SuperUser app in my app list.

    Thanks for your reply.

  105. 2ndInit BootMenu is the software to install Custom ROMS. Restart the device whenever Motorola M logo appears LED turns blue then immediately press volume down key. It will take you into the recovery mode.

    1. Go to recovery ->Custom Recovery. Here wipe both factory and cache partition.

    2. And also clean Wipe Dalvik Cache in Advanced.

    3. Now install zip from sd card. Set the location of rom and click yes to continue the process.

  106. Hi,

This step you explained above would be to install the new ROM in the device. But before that i need to install ClockWorkMod recovery as well as 2ndInit BootMenu right ?

Is there any specific order to install it ??

  107. First you must root the device and install custom clockworkmod recovery with the help of 2ndInit BootMenu.

  108. Hi,

I installed 2ndInit BootMenu after rooting the phone. How will i know if the ClockWorkMod Recovery has also been installed or not?

I could only find a 'clockworkmod' folder in my sdcard which had a 'download' folder inside of it.

  109. i already told in above comment how to enter into ClockWorkMod recovery.

  115. So far you have done very good. The only thing left is to install custom clockworkmod recovery. Search for SndInitDefy apk app and install it in the phone. Once you finished the installation let me know i will guide you for further step.
