Windows 8 is Coming?

Just as you were getting comfortable with Windows 7, it looks like Windows 8 is coming in the next two years. In a post celebrating the one-year anniversary of Windows 7 -- the fastest selling OS in history -- Microsoft's Dutch Web site briefly mentioned the construction and release of its successor.

"Microsoft is on course for the next version of Windows. But it will take about two years before 'Windows 8' on the market." Winrumors.com grabbed and translated the post, and CNET took a screenshot of the text, which unsurprisingly disappeared shortly after the news stole headlines. Now Microsoft is back to being tight-lipped about Windows 8 and its expected release.

Reports from last year suggested Microsoft was building a 128-bit version of its OS, which could very likely be Windows 8. More recently, NetworkWorld acquired more than 15 confidential slide decks detailing possible additions, including body-sensing features similar to the Xbox Kinect, a desktop app store like Apple's forthcoming Mac App Store, near-instant CPU booting, and a focus on powering tablets.

But most importantly, by the time Windows 8 supposedly drops, Microsoft is going to have Apple's latest OS to contend with. Apple just gave a sneak peek of Mac OS X Lion -- called a marriage of OS X and Apple's mobile iOS -- that includes some drool-inducing features like a desktop app store, advanced multitouch gestures, and more.

  1. Interesting, why the copyright is 2007 on the screenshot, when 7 has 2009? ;-)
Ye, and 128 bit system! When 64 bits are barely pushed in market with preinstalled releases and is not a general standard like XP's 32 bits.
Most programs are still running in 32 bits on 64 bit systems. Adobe can not write flash player plugin for IE 64 bit for a year! It is still preview release. Who is talking about 128 bit system?

  2. This new 128 bit OS is planned for the new Intel 9Ghz 9 core Falconz Processor (starting in 2021) with 10Petabytes of RAM. This is necessary to make the new Microsoft OS to run smoothly with few lags, few errors and few green screens of death (the marketing team decided to change the color).

  3. But the real question is whether people will be with MS a they were previously...
because Open Source is gaining ground in an amazing speed. Could MS keep up with its sky high prise...? specially in 3rd world countries?

  7. 128 bit is complete crap. The hardware comes first than the software, only IBM highly experimental labs have a 128 bit processor going on. And for the time being 64bit is MORE THAN FINE 2^64 bytes is more than fine. Once we get memristors going well, then we'll talk. But 128 is not coming in the next 20 years probably. And 32bit will likely be dropped from win 8

  10. For you open source people, we have a saying in my country:

How much money, that much music...

It pretty much sums up quality of product for the consumer, from Linux, over MS to Apple.

  14. it is not called windows 8 as of yet. It is still under R&D mode with a code name. Good luck with this. And remember you have to figure out what OS microsoft picked out of the 30+ version proposals since they are all still on the table.

  16. I can't wait to get my hands on a (DAM) fiber optic motherboard. I'll pay a premium for it. As for an OS, I will build on a linux 128 bit execution kernel in a heartbeat.

  19. For those of you who falliy over why every edition of windows will crash without a reinstall disk for repair along with the purchase of your computer at a retail store! Need only to understand the marketing strategy (OS distribution VS usage numbers ladies and gentlemen) example of any other OS!

PS, I alerted Microsoft copies of there product will be for sell in Iraq for under an Iraqi dollar. They replied "We'll bank on that!"
